FSBO's Think They Will Save Money...do they?
Eight percent of sellers sold their homes without an agent, down from 13% in 2004. FSBOs were older (median age 54 compared to 48) and had smaller incomes ($30,200 less) than sellers who hired an agent.
Seven of 10 FSBOs said the most important reason they sold their home on their own was to avoid paying a commission. So how did that work out for them? The median FSBO selling price of $132,800 fell well short of the $160,000 median for agent-assisted sales. Many FSBO sellers apparently weren’t entirely satisfied with the process or outcome. Only 29% said they would sell their home on their own next time. Half were not sure, while 21% said they would use a real estate agent.
